Dyslexia in schools

Posted Sunday 05 May 2019 15:34 PM

The TES have recently published an article revealing that schools failing to deal with dyslexic pupils are leaving them feeling 'stupid, undervalued and guilty'.
Time to try a different approach then!!

Dyslexia not recognised

Posted Thursday 17 Jan 2019 15:26 PM

Unbelievable that in 2019 that there are some Education authorities in the UK that do not distinguish between dyslexic children and those children that are struggling to read. What is horrifying is that there is an assumption that there is no need for dyslexic children to be taught differently from non-dyslexic children.
A complete failure to recognise the cause of dyslexia; not lack of opportunity, motivation, practice or sensory impairment but due to a different way of processing perceptual information.
Until more teachers and academics explore the work of Ron Davis little will change.
Here is a school in India making that change: https://www. Youtube. Com/watch?v=Z_-rTkOZbOI&feature=share

Autism client

Posted Saturday 22 Sep 2018 16:20 PM

It's been a while since my last blog. I've been busy working with individuals diagnosed with autism but just wanted to share the powerful effect the Davis programme had on one young man. He was depressed, unemployed, unwilling to leave his room preferring to communicate with others via the internet. It took some time but the concepts gave him the confidence to begin to interact with the real world. Six months after the programme he has a job, is no longer taking antidepressants and has significantly less social anxiety.
When will county councils recognise the value of this programme?

Chris Packham

Posted Wednesday 18 Oct 2017 17:27 PM

Very moving account by Chris Packham of his experience of being autistic. He quite rightly pointed out the lack of employment opportunities for those on the spectrum and the waste of their talents. The question posed was whether the world should adapt to them or whether they should adapt to the world.
The Davis Autism programme does not ask an autistic person to adapt or change who they are; it values and respects autism. The Davis Autism progamme simply allows an autistic person to make sense of the world.

Dyslexia explained

A nice little video by a dyslexic man explaining dyslexia. He successfully completed a Davis programme and so can use his natural talent to its fullest extent.

Dyslexia Awareness week

Posted Monday 04 Sep 2017 14:35 PM

2nd - 8th October. The BDA are saying 'Let's be positive about Dyslexia'. The Davis facilitators have been positive about Dyslexia for 40 years. We know that dyslexics can overcome their confusions without being dependent on mnemonics for spelling, software for reading, rote learnt techniques for time management. A Davis programme sets them free with the confidence to be. They have a gift and a Davis programme shows them how to use it.

Relationships

Posted Wednesday 16 Aug 2017 11:23 AM

Many autistic individuals struggle to understand the social rules that govern interactions and relationships. No wonder when the rules change depending on the situation. It seems it's OK to ignore a person with whom you have established a relationship if communication is by e-mail but such behaviour would be considered rude if you were in conversation face to face. Successful and effective relationships depend on an understanding, not of rules, but of monitoring and evaluating the effect of behaviour. This means having an awareness of self.
The Davis Autism approach has this as its core which is why it is useful for all.

New dyslexia research

Posted Sunday 13 Aug 2017 14:43 PM

New research by a group in new Zealand (published in July '17 in the journal Brain Language) link improved reading skills in dyslexic adults with stronger right brain activation patterns. The paper contributes to a growing body of research that supports the methods used in the Davis programmes!
